MBABANE – Government has taken another major step towards empowering the youth and strengthening the country’s future workforce after announcing the opening of scholarship applications for tertiary studies from 22 April 2026.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, inviting eligible emaSwati students to apply for sponsorship opportunities to study at local institutions as well as selected institutions within the SADC region.

The scholarship programme covers studies in Eswatini and neighbouring countries including Botswana, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Kenya, creating wider educational opportunities for young people seeking to further their studies.

Boost for Access to Higher Education

The opening of applications has been welcomed as a positive development for students and families, as it creates opportunities for deserving learners to access tertiary education regardless of financial challenges.

Government said applicants are expected to apply through the official online platform, making the process more accessible and convenient for students across the country.

The initiative reflects continued commitment to education, skills development, and youth empowerment as key pillars of national growth.

Focus on Priority Skills and National Development

Students have been encouraged to familiarise themselves with the Government Priority List of programmes available through official platforms before applying.

This approach ensures that scholarship support is directed towards fields of study that align with national development priorities and labour market needs.

By investing in relevant qualifications, government aims to develop a skilled workforce capable of driving economic growth, innovation, and improved service delivery.

Clear Guidelines for Applicants

To apply, students are required to have the following documents:

  • National Identity Card
  • Birth Certificate
  • Form 5 certificate or statement of results
  • Acceptance letter from a recognised institution

Applicants must also be below the age of 35 and hold acceptance letters from universities, colleges, or institutions recognised under the scholarship programme.

The closing date for applications is 30 June 2026.

Digital Access and Student Support

Government has also provided assistance channels for students requiring help with the online application process, including a dedicated contact number and in-person support at the scholarship office.

This has been viewed as an encouraging move that ensures no deserving student is left behind due to technical or administrative challenges.

Investing in the Nation’s Future

Education stakeholders say the scholarship programme demonstrates government’s continued investment in human capital and social mobility.

By opening doors to tertiary education both locally and regionally, the initiative is expected to uplift families, strengthen communities, and prepare the next generation of professionals and leaders.

As applications open, many students now have renewed hope of achieving their academic dreams and contributing meaningfully to the development of Eswatini.
