MBABANE – Today marked a fresh beginning for schools across Eswatini as pupils returned to classrooms for the third and final term of the year. The excitement was unmistakable—smiling children in neat uniforms filled the streets, while teachers stood ready to guide them through this crucial stretch.
From early morning, the nation’s roads buzzed with activity. Parents carefully dropped off their children, cars lined up at school gates, and traffic police worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth and safe start. Their whistles and signals brought order to the busy streets, helping students begin the term with confidence.
“We thank God the children are back, healthy and ready to learn. Even though we are a week behind schedule, with the dedicated staff we have, we will push forward,” said St. Marks Primary Principal, Bhekiwe Mabuza Dlamini, emphasizing optimism and determination.
This term’s reopening came later than the original September 9 date, adjusted to ensure the successful completion of this year’s Umhlanga Reed Dance without overlapping with the school calendar.
For many learners, the return was not just about books but also about reconnecting with friends and chasing dreams. “One of the things I really missed about school are my friends. I have so many stories to share with them from the holidays, and honestly, I cannot wait to finish primary and go to high school,” said Snethemba Simelane, a Grade 7 pupil at Florence Primary. “I am also excited to learn new things this term because it is our last one before we write exams. I want to work hard so I can go to the high school of my choice.”
Teachers also echoed this determination. A Zamani Primary educator, who preferred anonymity, shared: “We are ready to work hard this term. Being a week behind schedule is a challenge, but we will make sure students catch up.”
Across the country, classrooms quickly came alive with lessons. Educators confirmed that the focus will be on maximizing every learning opportunity to ensure pupils are well-prepared for their end-of-year examinations. With the reopening date confirmed and systems running smoothly, the final term has begun with renewed energy and purpose.
