MBABANE – Rehabilitation works are expected to commence on the Siphocosini–Mvambi Road following an official assessment that confirmed extensive deterioration along the key transport route.
The assessment was conducted during a site inspection on January 9, 2026, involving government officials from the Ministry of Works and representatives of the contracted company, AG Thomas. The inspection evaluated the extent of damage and set the groundwork for the start of rehabilitation works.
The Siphocosini–Mvambi Road, completed less than five years ago, is an important link connecting Siphocosini and surrounding communities to Ngwenya and the Lundzi Border. Over time, the road has developed widespread potholes, raising safety concerns among motorists, pedestrians and public transport operators.
Speaking during the inspection, government representative Mduduzi Matsebula acknowledged growing public frustration, noting that the condition of the road had negatively affected transport efficiency and daily movement along the corridor.
Road users have reported frequent vehicle breakdowns, increased transport costs and delays for businesses that rely on the route. Pedestrians have also raised safety concerns, particularly during rainy periods when potholes fill with water and become difficult to detect.
According to officials, AG Thomas is expected to mobilise to the site as early as next week. The scope of work will include repairing damaged sections, resurfacing affected areas and introducing measures aimed at preventing rapid deterioration in the future.
Authorities indicated that traffic management measures would be implemented during construction to minimise disruption while allowing the project to be completed within the shortest possible timeframe.
Once completed, the rehabilitation is expected to improve road safety, restore reliable access and reinforce the road’s role as a critical transport link supporting local communities and cross-border movement.
