SIPHOFANENI – The E2.6 billion Eswatini Road Infrastructure Improvement Programme (ERIIP) is set to transform connectivity at Siphofaneni through the construction of a 105.8 kilometre single-carriageway road.
Financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the project is expected to address long standing transport challenges faced by communities along the affected routes, particularly during the rainy season when poor road conditions make travelling difficult.
Indvuna yeNkhundla Phiwokwakhe Ngcamphalala said the poor condition of the road had made travelling extremely difficult for residents, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. “Travelling on this road was extremely difficult, especially during the rainy season” Ngcamphalala said.
He said communities were deeply grateful for the project, noting that a properly tarred road would bring immense relief and improve the daily lives of residents in surrounding communities. Ngcamphalala said the improved road would also create opportunities for local residents through employment during the construction phase. He said local hiring would allow community members to benefit directly from the infrastructure investment while gaining practical experience and skills.
The project will cover two major routes. The MR14 will stretch 80.2 kilometres from Siphofaneni through Sithobela and Maloma to Nsoko, while the MR21 will cover 25.7 kilometres from Maloma to Siphambanweni.
The infrastructure is expected to improve the movement of people and goods between communities while making access to schools, health facilities, businesses, markets and other essential services easier and more reliable. The project is also expected to support economic activity along the routes as improved connectivity creates better conditions for local businesses and residents to access markets and economic opportunities.
For communities that have endured difficult travelling conditions for years, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall, the project represents a major infrastructure investment with the potential to improve mobility and livelihoods.
Ngcamphalala said the development would bring much-needed relief to residents and improve connectivity across surrounding communities. This project will also expected to contribute to the wider development at Siphofaneni and the neighbouring communities
