BHUNYA – Swazi-born fashion designer Temaswati Vilakati continues to make waves beyond Eswatini’s borders, proudly showcasing her nation’s rich culture and heritage at the prestigious Lemo Fest Fashion Show held in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
Born and raised in the serene rural community of Bhunya, Temaswati carries the essence of her upbringing in every creation she designs. Her recent appearance at Lemo Fest, hosted at Lemo Mall, marked a defining moment in her blossoming career and firmly positioned her among Southern Africa’s emerging creative voices.
Held annually each October, Lemo Fest celebrates art, fashion, and innovation, bringing together designers, musicians, and creatives from across the region. This year, Temaswati proudly flew the Eswatini flag high, introducing the audience to a collection that seamlessly wove together traditional Swazi aesthetics and modern design elements.
“I was called and asked if I’d be interested to showcase, and I took the opportunity,” she recalled with a smile. “The moment I stepped onto the runway, surrounded by seasoned designers, I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be. It was amazing and fulfilling — it gave me more confidence and motivation.”
Temaswati’s passion for fashion was sparked when she moved from Mbabane to Bloemfontein for tertiary studies. There, she enrolled at the Bloemfontein Fashion Academy, where her talent and creativity flourished. “That’s where my journey for fashion began, and I later graduated there,” she said. “The training opened my eyes to how I could merge my culture with contemporary design.”
Her showcased collection at Lemo Fest drew deep inspiration from her Swazi roots, blending traditional motifs with modern silhouettes to create garments that spoke of both identity and evolution. “My inspiration came from the tradition I grew under as a Swazi and the transition to my modern side of life where things are beginning to blossom,” she explained. Each piece, she said, told a story of growth — a celebration of heritage meeting modernity.
Despite her growing success, Temaswati is candid about the challenges that come with being an emerging designer. “Putting together my collection is always a struggle when you’ve just begun being a professional designer, and finance is always a challenge,” she admitted. Yet, her determination remains steadfast. “The positive response and how people take notice of my detailed work inspires me to keep going.”
Temaswati’s journey represents more than individual success; it symbolises the growing influence of Eswatini’s creative sector across Southern Africa. Her dedication, passion, and pride in her heritage have earned her recognition as one of the country’s promising cultural ambassadors in the fashion industry.
As she continues to refine her craft and expand her reach, Temaswati remains grounded in her roots. “Everything I create carries a piece of Eswatini,” she said. “That will always be my signature.”
