MANZINI– Three bridges are being constructed in the Manzini Region to improve access to schools, clinics, markets and workplaces for communities that rely on river crossings for daily movement.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport, through the Roads Department in the Manzini Region, has launched the construction of the Mhlamati Culvert Crossing and Mtjeza Culvert Crossing under Ngculwini Inkhundla, as well as a third crossing connecting the Mvundla community over the Ngwemphisi River.

The Mhlamati and Mtjeza crossings are low-level crossings and are expected to be completed within 12 months. The projects are intended to provide safer and more reliable crossing points for residents, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when river crossings can become difficult or impassable.

The new infrastructure will also improve movement between communities and essential services, including schools, health facilities, markets and workplaces. The Ministry said the projects form part of its efforts to improve rural connectivity and provide communities with more reliable road infrastructure.

In addition to the bridge construction, the projects include road gravelling, which is expected to improve access along the connecting roads and support the movement of people and goods.

For communities in Ngculwini and Mvundla, improved crossings could make daily travel more reliable while supporting access to economic activities and essential services. The infrastructure is also expected to improve emergency access during periods of heavy rainfall, when poor road conditions and swollen rivers can disrupt movement.

The Ministry has called on communities in Ngculwini and Ngwemphisi to support the construction works and cooperate with the teams appointed to implement the projects. The construction of the three crossings marks another investment in rural road infrastructure, with completion expected to provide communities with safer and more dependable routes for everyday travel.
