MBABANE– UNFPA Eswatini has donated approximately 400 dignity kits worth E60,000 to girls and boys at Vulamasango School to promote personal hygiene, boost confidence, and support learners’ academic focus.

Each dignity kit contains essential hygiene items including sanitary pads, soap, towels, lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. The contents were tailored to suit the needs of both genders, ensuring that every student benefits regardless of sex. Beyond the physical items, the kits include educational pamphlets on menstrual health, aimed at fostering awareness and breaking taboos surrounding menstruation.

Speaking during the handover, UNFPA Head of Office Ms. Margaret Thwala-Tembe emphasized the importance of inclusive education on menstruation. “Inside these kits, there’s also an educational pamphlet on maintaining a healthy period. This is part of promoting both personal and environmental hygiene during menstruation. It’s important that this knowledge reaches girls and boys alike, to break the stigma and equip boys to support their sisters, friends, and relatives,” she said.

Commissioner General Ms. Phindile Dlamini welcomed the donation, saying it represented more than just a collection of items. She described the dignity kits as a meaningful investment in the learners’ wellbeing, helping to improve their health, dignity, and performance in school.

The dignity kits not only support good hygiene practices but also contribute to improved school attendance and participation, especially for girls who may otherwise miss class due to lack of access to sanitary products. By meeting these basic needs, the initiative helps learners concentrate better and perform well in school.

As the country continues its efforts to create safe and inclusive learning environments, this handover by UNFPA sets an example of how small, thoughtful interventions can have lasting impacts on the lives of young people, restoring dignity, one kit at a time.
