MBABANE — Government has clarified that the third-country national from the United States of America, currently under Correctional Services care, is not on a hunger strike as reported in some international media.
Instead, the deportee is voluntarily fasting and praying, a personal act of faith as he misses his family.
According to a government statement issued on Tuesday, a team of officials was immediately dispatched to verify reports made by a US law firm alleging that the individual had embarked on a hunger strike. The investigation revealed that the deportee is in good health and spirits and has chosen to fast and take liquids as part of his spiritual practice.
“He mentioned that he was currently fasting and praying because he was missing his family. He is currently taking liquids as part of his fasting process,” acting government Spokesperson Thabile Mdluli confirmed.
Mdluli further revealed that the American national is in constant communication with his family and his US legal representatives.
Government Ensures Well-being and Support
Government has assured the nation and the international community that all third-country nationals under its care are being treated with dignity and compassion. They continue to receive comprehensive healthcare, counseling, and psychosocial support to safeguard their physical and emotional well-being.
“The third-country nationals are in good hands and are receiving physical and psychosocial support, including counselling,” Mdluli said.
Authorities have emphasized that the fasting deportee is being monitored closely to ensure that his spiritual exercise does not compromise his health.
Freedom of Religion Respected
Government reaffirmed its respect for freedom of religion as a fundamental human right. Officials stated that they have no intention to interfere with the deportee’s fasting and prayer, which are recognized as expressions of faith.
“The Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini upholds freedom of religion as a fundamental human right; hence the third-country nationals are allowed to practice their faith through worship, prayer, and spiritual guidance,” Mdluli noted.
