LWANDLE – A new agricultural chapter has begun for Velezizweni youth as they partner with Rwanda’s People Together Organization to pilot sunflower farming at Lwandle.

The initiative, led by the Velezizweni Youth Multi-Purpose Cooperative, aims to boost youth participation in agribusiness and unlock sustainable economic opportunities in rural Eswatini.

During a press briefing, Cooperative Chairperson Ellis Dlamini said pilot programmes played a vital role in shaping impactful, scalable solutions.

“The power of pilot programs lies in their exploration of novel approaches, feasibility, and scalability before full implementation,” Dlamini said.

“They test the viability of projects, ensure resources are used wisely, and help establish governance structures that deliver results.”

Dlamini described agriculture as a transformative tool for the country’s youth.

“It reduces poverty, improves food security, and opens the door to agritourism, which not only preserves tradition but drives local development,” he said.

The visiting Rwandan delegation, led by Executive Director Dr. Silus Mnyamenza, toured the sunflower plots and engaged with the youth in technical training and a vibrant Q&A session. Dr. Mnyamenza encouraged the youth to pursue agribusiness passionately.

“Our doors remain open to all young Swatis who want to grow in agriculture,” he said.

Mr. Matsebula, President of the organization’s Eswatini chapter, delivered a lecture on sunflower production, followed by an informative dialogue on wider agribusiness opportunities.

To mark the partnership, Dr. Mnyamenza gifted sunflower seeds to the youth, pledging continued support and knowledge exchange.

The event was attended by members of the Rwandan executive board, YALI Eswatini Chapter Chairperson Siphiwo Lushaba and Communications Officer Sandile Nxumalo, Rev. TS Dlamini, Grace Upon Grace Investments Founder Nonduduzo Nsibande, and a large group of inspired young farmers.

With seeds now in hand and minds full of ideas, Velezizweni’s youth are determined to cultivate a brighter, self-reliant future, one sunflower at a time.
