MBABANE – World Vision Eswatini’s National Director, Amos Zaindi, met UN Resident Coordinator George Wachira at the UN House in Mbabane today, 11 September 2025, to discuss the country’s progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ways both organisations can support national development.
During the meeting, Wachira highlighted key challenges facing Eswatini, including food insecurity, unemployment, poverty, and natural disasters. He noted that the country often feels the impact of events in neighbouring countries such as Mozambique and Madagascar. “This is a country with a big ambition, good vision, and a drive to get there. However, the challenges are huge, despite being categorised as a middle-income country,” he said.
Zaindi reaffirmed World Vision’s commitment to supporting the Government in delivering solutions to the people. “We are here to support the Government through our technical expertise and resources,” he said.
Eswatini continues to face high unemployment, a major developmental challenge. According to the International Labour Organization, the unemployment rate was 34.4% in 2024, slightly down from 35% in 2023. Youth unemployment remains particularly high, which continues to affect national development.
The country is also exposed to climate-related risks such as droughts, floods, heatwaves, and wildfires. These events disproportionately affect agriculture and vulnerable populations, worsening food insecurity and slowing progress towards development goals.
The meeting reflects ongoing dialogue and collaboration between World Vision and the UN to address these challenges. Both leaders agreed to continue working together to support the Government in building a future where no one is left behind.
