EZULWINI– Forty-seven professionals from across Eswatini were recognised for completing a specialised climate finance training programme during a ceremony held on Friday, March 17, 2026 evening at the British High Commissioner’s Residence in Royal Villas.
The event, hosted by British High Commissioner Colin Wells, celebrated participants who successfully completed the Commonwealth “Write-shop” Training on Enhancing Transparency on Climate Finance Reporting and Capacity Building for Access to Climate Finance, conducted from February 3 to 6, 2026.
Addressing attendees, Wells commended the graduates and emphasised the importance of building strong, transparent systems for climate funding. “Transparent reporting and strong proposals are the bridge between good ideas and funded projects that build resilience, protect livelihoods, and safeguard ecosystems,” he said.
The training programme brought together representatives from government ministries, agencies and various institutions, with a focus on improving technical skills in climate finance reporting and proposal development. It was delivered through collaboration between the Commonwealth Secretariat and the United Nations Environment Programme, with financial support from the Global Environment Facility.
Among the dignitaries present were Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs Jane Mkhonta-Simelane, climate finance expert Deepa Pullanikkatil, and Duduzile Nhlengethwa-Masina, who currently serves as Acting Principal Secretary and Director of the Eswatini Meteorological Service.
Wells also reflected on the longstanding relationship between the United Kingdom and Eswatini, highlighting shared priorities in sustainable development and cooperation within the Commonwealth. He noted that King Charles III, as Head of the Commonwealth, plays a central role in advancing technical support initiatives that benefit member countries such as Eswatini, a member since 1968.
The ceremony coincided with national celebrations marking the lead-up to the Ruby Jubilee and 58th birthday of King Mswati III, adding a symbolic layer to the occasion.
Beyond recognising completion of the programme, the event emphasised Eswatini’s growing capacity to engage effectively with international climate finance mechanisms. The newly trained professionals are expected to play a critical role in strengthening the country’s ability to secure funding and implement impactful environmental projects.
