MBABANE – Dagga weighing about 630kg and worth more than R4 million has been seized at the Oshoek Border Post, following the interception of an Eswatini-registered truck entering South Africa from the Kingdom.
The seizure was made at about 1:30am on Monday when South African Police Service (SAPS) officers were conducting searches on the arrival side of the Oshoek Port of Entry in Mpumalanga.
According to the SAPS Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner’s office, officers searched a Volvo horse and trailer and discovered 49 bags containing suspected dagga.
The consignment, which weighed approximately 630kg, was estimated to have a street value of over R4 million.
A suspect was arrested in connection with the consignment and detained at Hartebeeskop SAPS. The suspect is expected to appear before the relevant court on a charge relating to dealing in dagga.
The truck, which bears an Eswatini registration number, was also seized by police. According to the police, the vehicle reportedly belongs to a logistics company based in Eswatini.
The latest seizure has raised concerns over the continued movement of illicit drugs across the Eswatini-South Africa border, although police are yet to establish where the dagga originated and where it was destined.
Investigations are continuing to determine the origin and intended destination of the consignment, while police are also working to establish whether other individuals are linked to the suspected drug trafficking operation.
The SAPS said it would continue intensifying searches and law-enforcement operations at border posts and along major routes as part of efforts to combat the trafficking and distribution of illicit drugs.
