PIGG’S PEAK – In a heartwarming demonstration of community care and support, Piggs Peak Town Council has extended a helping hand to disadvantaged girls by donating sanitary pads to Mhlatane High school and Peak Central High School.
This initiative is aimed at ensuring that no girl misses school due to lack of menstrual hygiene products, reinforcing the town’s commitment to education and well-being.
During the official handover, Deputy Mayor Councillor Lungile Dlamini emphasized the Council’s dedication to collaborating with schools to promote health, hygiene, and dignity among students.
“At Piggs Peak Town Council, we believe that education is the key to a brighter future. By providing sanitary pads, we are not only supporting the education of young girls but also fostering their confidence and ensuring that they do not face unnecessary barriers to learning,” said Dlamini.
The donation, which falls under the Council’s #BecauseWeCare initiative, aims to create a safe and supportive learning environment for girls, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. Studies have shown that period poverty—the lack of access to menstrual hygiene products—negatively affects school attendance, self-esteem, and academic performance among young women.
The beneficiaries expressed their heartfelt gratitude, with many highlighting how this act of kindness would positively impact their daily lives.
A Mhlatane High School student, who received the donation, shared her appreciation:“This support means a lot to us. There are times when some of us miss school because we do not have the resources we need. Now, we can focus on our studies without worry.”
A Community Committed to Change
Piggs Peak Town Council has been actively involved in social empowerment projects, recognizing that sustainable development begins with uplifting local communities. The sanitary pad donation aligns with broader national efforts to support young girls, following similar education and hygiene initiatives led by the Ministry of Education and Training.
As the town continues to prioritize the well-being of its youth, Councillor Dlamini assured that this was only the beginning of more impactful projects aimed at improving the lives of students.
“We are committed to finding ways to support the youth in our town. Today’s donation is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure that every child, regardless of their background, has an equal opportunity to succeed.”
A Brighter Future for Every Girl
This initiative reflects the true spirit of Ubuntu, where communities come together to support and uplift each other. As Piggs Peak Town Council continues its work in education and social welfare, it sends a strong message: empowering girls means empowering the future.
With continued collaboration and community-driven efforts, no girl should ever have to choose between her education and her basic needs.
