MBABANE – The European Union (EU) and Government of Eswatini have signed a 15-million-Emalangeni grant agreement to integrate renewable energy solutions into micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
This strategic initiative is set to enhance sustainability and economic growth across key industries, including agriculture, agribusiness, and manufacturing.
The grant agreement was formally signed by Acting Principal Secretary Sicelo Nxumalo, representing the Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, Prince Lonkhokhela, alongside Minister of Economic Planning and Development, Dr. Thambo Gina.
The partnership underscores Eswatini’s commitment to economic resilience and environmental sustainability, aligning with global climate change mitigation efforts.
A Game-Changer for Small Businesses
The four-year program (2025–2029), funded by the European Union, will be implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy. The initiative will enable MSMEs to adopt clean energy technologies, reduce operational costs, and boost profitability while significantly lowering carbon emissions.
Dr. Thambo Gina emphasized that this initiative is a game-changer for Eswatini’s entrepreneurial landscape, as it provides affordable and sustainable energy solutions to businesses that often struggle with high electricity costs.
“This investment will not only support economic growth but also ensure that MSMEs become key players in Eswatini’s transition to a green economy,” he stated.
Towards a Greener, More Sustainable Future
This project is in line with Eswatini’s broader goals of energy security and sustainability, promoting eco-friendly business practices that will contribute to a more competitive and climate-resilient economy. The funding will be directed toward solar, biogas, and other renewable energy solutions, helping small businesses thrive while minimizing their environmental footprint.
The EU delegation expressed confidence in the impact of the initiative, highlighting that renewable energy integration will unlock new opportunities for local businesses, create jobs, and strengthen Eswatini’s economic position in the region.
As Eswatini embarks on this transformative journey, the partnership between the EU, UNDP, and government signals a commitment to fostering an innovative, sustainable, and inclusive business environment.
With renewable energy set to power MSMEs, Eswatini is moving towards a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous future—one where small businesses can flourish without compromising the environment.
