NGOLOLWENI– Bongumuzi Duncan Mdluli, a graduate of Southern Africa Nazarene University, is showing that determination and initiative can sow the seeds of success even when life doesn’t go according to plan.
After earning his degree in Teaching in 2022, Mdluli faced the harsh reality many graduates encounter, a tough job market with limited opportunities. But instead of waiting idly, he rolled up his sleeves and turned to the land. Today, he is not only a proud farmer but also an inspiration to many young people in Eswatini.
Mdluli began his agricultural journey under Siyalima Ngololweni Co-operative, where he worked for two years. It was during this time that he gained practical farming experience and was allocated a 0.4-hectare plot. His passion for agriculture grew, and with the support of his brother who gave him land to farm independently, he took a bold step and started his own farming venture.
Season after season, Mdluli cultivates a variety of crops, including butternut, maize, and beans, adapting to what the soil and market demand. His produce is sold mainly through NAMBORD (National Agricultural Marketing Board), which not only provides a steady market but also supports him with training and expert guidance, especially in pest and disease control. Local customers also make up an important part of his market.
He credits much of his success to the support system around him, from family to institutions like NAMBORD. “NAMBORD has played a big role in my journey. They support me with training and helps in buying my produce,” he says.
When asked what advice he would give to fellow graduates, Mdluli doesn’t hesitate. “I know life is difficult outside, but instead of robbing people or giving up, let’s try the small things we can and turn them into something big.”
Bongumuzi Mdluli is a living example that success doesn’t always follow the path of a degree. Sometimes, it grows in the fields, watered by hard work, resilience, and hope.
