EZULWINI – Poetry and performance intertwined in a night filled with emotion and artistry.
This past weekend, the War Words 6 poetry show, headlined by the talented Siya Imbongi, alongside the first-ever OGF Poetry Awards, ignited the stage and captured the hearts of poetry lovers.
Themed ‘The Rise of the Army Poetry show,was held at the Bethel Court Vineyard Hotel on Saturday,(28 June 2025).
With a full house in attendance, the event was a stunning celebration of creativity, emotion, and artistry.
Siya Imbongi delivered an Impeccable performance that spanned three unforgettable sets, showcasing poems from his acclaimed EP.
The audience was not just spectators; they were participants, reciting along with Siya during poignant moments, particularly during fan-favourite pieces like “Replay” and “Mdzimba.” The energy in the room was palpable, as many audience members were moved to tears, highlighting the emotional depth of his work.
The night was elevated by a lineup of extraordinary guest poets:
– Lizwe Umlangeni stole the show with a performance that earned him a standing ovation. His dynamic energy and engaging wordplay captivated the audience, making him a crowd favorite second only to Siya.
– Gcayi Umkhaphelwano took the stage with his deep siSwati poems, sharing nostalgic pieces that resonated with the audience and celebrated cultural heritage.
– The Poetic General delivered a soul-stirring set, featuring his thought-provoking poem “Wakhuluma Umuntfu lomdzala.” His heartfelt acknowledgment of a teacher who inspired him added a personal and touching element to his performance.
– Melihle, the only female poet in the lineup, represented women’s voices with grace, reciting a powerful poem about life and personal growth, beautifully introduced by the host Mdz.
The evening was further enriched by musical performances that complemented the poetic expressions:
– Blessing Dludlu brought the crowd together with his deep spiritual songs, creating an uplifting atmosphere.
– Samukelo Dlamini charmed the audience with his African melodies, while Bulelwa added a unique flair with her saxophone, captivating everyone in attendance.
In closing, Tony Mabaso, the movement’s CEO, shared inspiring remarks about the vision and mission of the movement, emphasizing their commitment to enhancing the poetry scene in Eswatini. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the audience, especially first-time attendees, and acknowledged the support from partners and sponsors, including M7 Graphics, Jonokuhle Upholstery, The Music Lounge, and The Final Episodes.
