EZULWINI— Eswatini’s entertainment scene is preparing for a dose of South African star power as Amapiano vocalist MaWhoo heads to the Kingdom for The RichMonalisa Live Eswatini on October 2.
The singer, whose real name is Thandeka Nontobeko Ngema, was born in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal. Her musical journey began long before the spotlight found her. MaWhoo has revealed that she started singing at a young age and even attempted to take a recorded song to a local radio station when she was only 11, but was turned away because of her age.
Her road to becoming one of the recognisable voices in South African Amapiano has also included education, modelling and entrepreneurship. She holds a degree from the University of South Africa and previously worked as a teacher before choosing music as her full-time career.
MaWhoo stepped firmly into the music industry with her professional releases, gaining wider attention with ‘Umshado’ featuring Heavy-K in 2019. Since then, her distinctive vocals have found their way across house, soulful sounds, Amapiano, Bolo House, Hip Hop and Maskandi, while collaborations with heavyweights such as DJ Maphorisa, Master KG, Kabza De Small, Kelvin Momo, Focalistic and Nkosazana Daughter have strengthened her position in the industry.
Now, the voice behind hits such as ‘Moya Wami’, ‘Ngiyamthanda’ and ‘Thokoza’ is bringing that musical journey to Eswatini.
The announcement followed a cheeky social-media teaser from organiser and artist Zulu D, who posted: “Gents, anifuni sigeze emehlo sivele sicele iMegasound imletse?” — loosely translated as, “Gents, don’t you want to wash our eyes and simply ask Megasound to bring her?”
The hint has now become reality.
MaWhoo will headline a star-studded local lineup featuring Zulu D, Young Zesh, Sgitha, Gifted Kosie, President, N Kay & Smally, Maradona, Baybash, Virus, Dualforce and resident DJs at Mdzimba View Shisanyama.
The event runs from 4pm until 3am, with general pre-sale tickets at E100, VIP pre-sale at E300, general gate tickets at E200 and VIP gate tickets at E400. Tickets are available through MojaTicket.
With MaWhoo’s journey from a young girl with a rejected radio demo to an internationally travelling performer now bringing her sound to Eswatini, October 2 promises to be a night where the Kingdom gets to experience the magic for itself.
