Hailing from Pigg’s Peak, TeDdy is fueled by dreams and the undeniable urge to express himself. Fast forward to today, and he’s not just a rapper; he’s a multifaceted artist and producer who blends genres and stories like an alchemist of sound.
With a unique flair for merging hip-hop beats with eclectic influences, TeDdY takes listeners on a journey through his life experiences, triumphs, and struggles. TeDdY’s musical journey began in 2012 when he discovered his ability to rap while in Grade 6 at Rosenberg Primary School. Inspired by his friend Bongiswa Banda (Banda Hose), who was already making strides in the music industry, TeDdY felt a mix of admiration and motivation. “Jealousy had a major impact,” he recalls. “Banda Hose would pull up with his lyric book full of songs he composed.” This competitive spirit ignited his passion, leading him to perform live for the first time, lip-syncing to “Gwayimane,” a celebrated local hit. That exhilarating moment marked the beginning of his songwriting journey.
For TeDdY, music has always served as an escape and a form of therapy. He shares, “Growing up, music was my escape, my therapy.” Influenced by hip-hop legends like KRTC and 3 Steps, he found solace in their raw storytelling. The realization that rap could change lives inspired him to pursue it as a career. However, the path hasn’t been without obstacles. “Self-doubt and criticism have been constant companions,” he admits, adding that financial instability has also posed difficulties. Yet, these challenges have shaped him into the artist he is today. “The struggles have shaped me into the artist I am today, and I’m grateful for the journey,” he reflects.
Since those early days, TeDdY’s music has transformed significantly. Initially experimenting with various styles, he has grown into an artist known for his personal and storytelling-driven lyrics. “My lyrics became more personal and storytelling-driven,” he explains. His production style has also matured, incorporating live instrumentation and diverse influences that reflect his growth.
Primarily rooted in hip-hop, TeDdY’s sound is characterized by lyrical depth and boom bap production. Drawing inspiration from both classic icons and contemporary figures, he has created a distinctive musical identity that resonates with fans across generations. “I’m excited to see where it takes me next,” he says, highlighting his ongoing evolution as an artist.
While TeDdY admits to losing count of his released tracks, he is currently focused on an exciting new EP titled Going Above Normal Guys [G.A.N.G]. “One of my favorite songs is ‘iLanga,’” he shares, adding that it features Heizo and B Sim Da Poet. This song, along with others from the EP, showcases his growth and the relatable messages that define his work.
What differentiates TeDdY from other local artists is his authentic storytelling. “What sets me apart is my authentic storytelling, drawing from personal experiences,” he notes. His energetic performances and dedication to his craft foster a strong connection with fans. “The connection with my fans keeps me motivated,” he reflects. By blending traditional hip-hop elements with eclectic influences, he continuously pushes boundaries while remaining true to his artistic vision.
For TeDdY, the connection with his fans is what keeps him motivated. “Seeing how my music impacts their lives, hearing their stories, and knowing I’m making a difference keeps me motivated,” he says. The creative process—writing, producing, and performing—delivers a rush that drives him forward. Moreover, the legacy of hip-hop and his responsibility to contribute to its evolution inspire him to keep pushing boundaries. “Ultimately, it’s the love for music and the desire to share my voice that keeps me going,” he concludes.
