MBABANE – Eswatini has become the epicentre of African tradition and unity as chiefs, kings, queens, and elders from across the continent gather for the African Traditional Leaders Conference.

The five-day conference, which began on Friday, 5 September 2025, at Esibayeni Lodge in Matsapha, will run until Tuesday, 9 September. The historic gathering seeks to reclaim Africa’s heritage, reaffirm the role of traditional leadership in modern governance, and strengthen unity among the continent’s indigenous leaders.

Call to Reclaim Africa’s Heritage

The conference opened with a keynote address from His Majesty Dr Robinson Tanyi of Cameroon, Convener of the African Indigenous Governance Council (AIGC). In his speech, he reminded delegates of the urgency of unity, urging them to craft homegrown solutions that would serve Africa for generations to come.

“Traditional leaders are the custodians of our culture and values,” he said. “This conference is about reclaiming our rightful place in shaping the future of our continent.”

Unity in Diversity

The atmosphere on the first day reflected a spirit of Ubuntu, with vibrant networking sessions, group photographs of the leaders, and an attentive audience listening to His Majesty’s address.

The highlight of the evening was a gala dinner that brought together kings, queens, and chiefs under one roof. The dinner symbolised not just celebration but a commitment to harnessing African values for sustainable peace, unity, and governance.

“The spirit of Ubuntu filled the air,” remarked one participant. “This event proves that our traditions are not relics of the past, but powerful tools for shaping Africa’s future.”

Eswatini as Host Nation

The conference is being hosted under the patronage of His Majesty King Mswati III, underscoring Eswatini’s commitment to cultural preservation and regional leadership.

Over 100 royal councillors, dignitaries, and representatives from the African diaspora are participating in the sessions. Delegates are expected to discuss a wide range of themes, including:

  • The relevance of traditional leadership in the 21st century.
  • Preserving indigenous governance systems.
  • Strengthening African unity through culture and heritage.
  • The role of traditional leaders in driving sustainable development and peace.

Diaspora and Independence Reflections

The gathering has also placed strong emphasis on recognising the contributions of the African diaspora and drawing lessons from Africa’s post-independence journey. Delegates highlighted how traditional leaders played a critical role in resisting colonial domination and now continue to serve as symbols of unity and resilience.

Looking Ahead

Day One laid the foundation for transformative dialogue, with participants agreeing that traditional leaders remain vital partners in governance, peacebuilding, and cultural preservation.

The conference will continue over the coming days, with sessions dedicated to formulating resolutions and organisational frameworks to advance indigenous governance across the continent.

“This is a powerful journey for African unity and sustainable development,” organisers said. “Our traditions remain the backbone of our future.”
