MBABANE – Lavumisa is set to emerge as a key industrial hub for imported and locally produced goods, marking a major step forward in Eswatini’s drive towards industrialisation, job creation and inclusive economic growth.
This was revealed on Wednesday, 15 January 2026, when the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Appolo Maphalala, visited the Lavumisa Town Board, where officials presented a proposal for the establishment of an industrial park or estate within the town. During the visit, the Town Board also showcased a proposed site earmarked for the development.
According to a statement issued by the Lavumisa Town Board, the proposed industrial park is expected to unlock significant economic opportunities by attracting both local and foreign investment, stimulating business activity, and creating employment for the surrounding communities. The initiative aligns with government’s broader vision of decentralising development and strengthening emerging towns as contributors to national growth.
Lavumisa’s strategic location is seen as a major advantage. The town lies close to the Lavumisa border gate, serves as a gateway between Eswatini and South Africa, and is traversed by an existing railway line. Its proximity to Richards Bay Port in South Africa further positions it as an ideal logistics and industrial centre for the import and export of goods.
The Town Board noted that these factors present a unique opportunity for the establishment of a successful industrial park, which would facilitate the efficient movement of goods, reduce transport costs, and enhance Eswatini’s competitiveness in regional and international trade. Locally produced goods could also be exported with greater ease, supporting value addition and manufacturing within the country.
“This strategic development underscores government’s commitment to inclusive growth, sound spatial planning, and the industrialisation of emerging towns as engines of national development,” reads part of the statement issued following the minister’s visit.
The proposed industrial park is expected to host a range of activities, including warehousing, light manufacturing, logistics services and processing industries. Once operational, it is anticipated to create both direct and indirect employment opportunities, benefiting skilled and semi-skilled workers, as well as small businesses in supporting sectors.
Residents of Lavumisa have welcomed the proposed development with optimism and enthusiasm. Many expressed hope that the industrial park would address unemployment challenges in the area, particularly among young people, while also stimulating local entrepreneurship.
“This development will change lives,” said one resident. “It means jobs, opportunities for our youth, and growth for our town.”
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has consistently emphasised the importance of integrated urban planning and infrastructure-led development in accelerating economic transformation. The proposed Lavumisa industrial park reflects this approach by linking spatial planning with economic activity and regional trade routes.
As consultations and planning processes continue, the Lavumisa Town Board and relevant government stakeholders are expected to engage investors, communities and development partners to ensure that the project is sustainable and inclusive.
If realised, the Lavumisa industrial park could position the town as a strategic node in Eswatini’s industrial landscape, contributing to economic diversification, regional integration and long-term prosperity for the nation.
