MBABANE – Mayiwane  Member of Parliament  Hon. Sicelo ‘Khunga Nkhosi’ Dlamini, has expressed heartfelt sympathy to families and communities affected by the heavy rains currently being experienced across the country, while urging the public to prioritise safety and exercise extreme caution.

In a statement issued on January 16, 2026, Member of Parliament Hon Sicelo Dlamini said the persistent rainfall has caused widespread damage to roads, bridges, homes and livelihoods, leaving many residents facing serious challenges.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy to all families and communities who have been affected by the heavy rains currently being experienced across the country,” he said. “These rains have caused damage to roads, bridges, homes, and livelihoods, leaving many residents facing serious challenges.”

The MP emphasised that the situation is not unique to Mayiwane, noting that several regions across Eswatini are facing similar difficulties.

“This situation is not unique to Mayiwane alone. Many regions across the country are experiencing similar difficulties as a result of the persistent rainfall. We therefore stand together as a nation during this trying time,” he said.

Hon. Sicelo  Dlamini issued a strong safety warning to the public, particularly regarding flooded rivers, damaged bridges and unsafe road conditions. He cautioned against the construction or use of temporary and overhanging bridges, describing them as extremely dangerous.

“Spilling rivers and damaged bridges pose a serious danger. Construction of temporary bridges and overhanging bridges is strictly prohibited,” he said. “I appeal to everyone not to attempt crossing flooded rivers, and not to use risky shortcuts in an effort to reach destinations faster, as this may result in loss of life.”

He further urged parents not to send young children on errands during this period, stressing that safety must remain the highest priority. “Your safety remains our top priority,” Hon. Sicelo  Dlamini emphasised.

Looking ahead, the MP reassured residents that government intervention will follow once weather conditions improve.

“I want to assure the people of Mayiwane that once the rains subside, Government will move swiftly to restore damaged roads, bridges, and infrastructure, and to ensure that access to communities is fully reinstated,” he said.

In the interim, the Mayiwane Inkhundla Council, working with relevant authorities, remains on standby to assist affected households. Residents were encouraged to report all household damages to the council and to seek urgent help through emergency lines.

Meanwhile, community resilience has been evident in parts of the constituency. Earlier this week, residents of Ntokozweni under Mayiwane Inkhundla took it upon themselves to repair severely damaged gravel roads after heavy rains rendered them impassable.

While waiting for immediate government intervention, community members mobilised to dig gravel and close deep dongas, restoring access for vehicles and essential services despite ongoing downpours. The initiative has been widely praised as a demonstration of unity, self-reliance and commitment to keeping communities connected during difficult times.

As the country continues to grapple with the effects of heavy rainfall, Hon. Dlamini called on residents to remain vigilant, patient and supportive of one another.

“Let us remain vigilant, patient, and supportive of one another as we navigate this difficult period. May God protect our communities,” he said.

Emergency numbers 977, 999 and 933 are available 24 hours a day.
