MBABANE– The Ministry of Agriculture has established new Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) checkpoints at key locations around Manzini as part of intensified national efforts to contain the spread of the highly contagious livestock disease.

According to a public notice issued by the Ministry, the new checkpoints are now operational at the Gum Tree area in Manzini, Nhlambeni opposite the water treatment plant along the MR9 Yithi Abantu Highway, and at Ngwane Park in Sidzakeni near the cemetery.

The establishment of the new checkpoints follows the relocation of the previously operational Mbadlane and Ntabamhloshana checkpoints. The Ministry said the move forms part of ongoing containment measures aimed at strengthening biosecurity controls along major transport routes with high traffic volumes.

Veterinary personnel deployed at the checkpoints will be responsible for monitoring the movement of livestock, animal products, and vehicles, with motorists expected to comply fully with all instructions issued on site. Measures include vehicle disinfection and inspections to prevent the transmission of the disease.

The Ministry has urged members of the public and motorists to exercise caution when approaching the checkpoints and to cooperate with officers to ensure smooth traffic flow and effective enforcement of disease control measures.

The Ministry urged the public to cooperate with the new checkpoints, saying the measures are necessary to protect animal health and livelihoods, while acknowledging the inconvenience to motorists.

Foot and Mouth Disease poses a serious threat to the livestock sector, particularly cattle production, and can have severe economic consequences if not effectively controlled. The disease affects trade, household incomes, and national food security.

Authorities have reiterated that compliance with movement restrictions is mandatory, warning that failure to adhere to regulations may result in penalties, including the seizure of livestock.

The Ministry continues to monitor the situation and has called on the public to support national efforts to protect the livestock industry and prevent further spread of FMD.
