MBABANE– Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society has extended much-needed support to Masingane volunteers after donating irrigation materials worth E7 000, a move set to strengthen food security and livelihoods within the community.
According to a statement from the Society, the donation was made possible through support from its development partners, the British Red Cross, under the ELISSA Project.
“Last week Thursday, Masingane volunteers received E7 000 worth of irrigation material from the Eswatini Red Cross Society, through the British Red Cross ELISSA Project, to help improve water access for their community garden,” the statement read.
The Society said the irrigation equipment will significantly enhance crop production, enabling the community garden to support household livelihoods and generate income for local volunteers. Improved water access is expected to increase resilience against climate variability and strengthen sustainable food production within the area.
In addition to the support provided in Masingane, the Society also reported progress under its Nhlangano Branch, where a newly established unit in Pongolwane has trained 19 community volunteers in First Aid. The trained volunteers are expected to play a critical role in responding to emergencies and supporting community preparedness.
“These are community members whose intention is to help their community thrive, build resilience against disasters, and find innovative ways of living with the effects of disasters,” the Society said.
The training forms part of Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society’s broader commitment to strengthening community-based disaster preparedness and response, particularly in rural areas that are often most affected by climate-related shocks.
The Society further highlighted that the recent heavy rains experienced across the country had caused significant damage in several communities. Reports of collapsed houses were received by Red Cross branches from affected households, pointing to an urgent need for humanitarian assistance.
“The impact of the recent rains was severe, with many households reporting damaged or collapsed homes,” the Society said, adding that there was a pressing need for emergency shelter and food assistance for affected families.
In response, Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society has called on individuals, organisations and corporate entities to support ongoing relief efforts. Members of the public wishing to report emergencies or offer assistance were encouraged to contact Red Cross branches in Manzini, Mahwalala, Siteki, Nhlangano and Pigg’s Peak.
The Society’s toll-free number, 7802 4651, is available for reporting emergencies or coordinating support.
Through partnerships, volunteer training and timely humanitarian interventions, Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society continues to play a vital role in building resilient communities and responding to the evolving needs of vulnerable households across the country.
