MANZINI– The Eswatini Environment Authority (EEA) in collaboration with the Eswatini National Trust Commission (ENTC) successfully launched Day One of the Hlanyela Likusasa Schools Tree Planting Campaign, engaging learners from Mliba Primary School and the School for the Deaf in the Lubombo and Manzini regions.
The initiative forms part of ongoing national efforts to promote environmental education and climate action among young people. During the visit, learners participated in interactive sessions where they were taught about the importance of plants in sustaining life, protecting ecosystems and improving climate resilience.
Officials from EEA and ENTC emphasised that trees play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity, reducing soil erosion and improving air quality. Learners were encouraged to take an active role in protecting the environment by planting and caring for trees within their communities and schools.
The programme also introduced pupils to the Mbuluzi Ecosystems Restoration Project, a major environmental initiative aimed at restoring degraded ecosystems within the Mbuluzi River Basin. Through the project, authorities are working to rehabilitate natural habitats, protect water resources and strengthen community participation in conservation activities.
According to organisers, the campaign is designed not only to plant trees but also to cultivate environmental responsibility among young people. By engaging learners at an early age, the initiative aims to develop future environmental stewards who understand the importance of protecting natural resources.
The Hlanyela Likusasa campaign is expected to reach several schools across the country as part of broader efforts to promote sustainable environmental practices and strengthen climate resilience in Eswatini.
Environmental authorities said collaboration between institutions, schools and communities is essential in ensuring the long-term success of restoration programmes and environmental conservation efforts across the kingdom.
The campaign continues in other regions as more learners are expected to participate in tree planting activities and environmental awareness programmes.
