MANZINI– The highly anticipated Special Olympics Eswatini Coaches Training officially commenced on 09 March 2026, at the Sisema Conference and Accommodation centre in Manzini.
A diverse group of coaches from 12 inclusive schools and prominent national stakeholders gathered for intensive training led by regional experts to empower athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
This landmark four-day initiative aims to bridge the gap in inclusive sports by equipping local mentors with the technical and psychological skills required to foster an environment where every athlete can thrive.
The atmosphere at Sisema was one of profound dedication as participants began their journey under the tutelage of renowned facilitators. Leading the sessions are Mr. Joe Mutua, the Special Olympics Africa Region Manager for Programme Development, and Mr. Jimmy Masina from Special Olympics South Africa.
Their presence brings a wealth of continental expertise to Eswatini, ensuring that the training aligns with global best practices for adaptive sports and athlete-centred mentorship.
This unique opportunity is designed to be a catalyst for change within the Kingdom’s education and sporting sectors. By focusing on the holistic development of the individual, the programme moves beyond traditional drills.
Instead, it prioritises personalised support and guidance, which are essential for helping athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) overcome societal challenges and reach their full potential. The curriculum specifically addresses how to adapt physical activities to meet diverse needs, ensuring no child is left behind due to their physical or cognitive condition.
Special Olympics Eswatini expressed that they are genuinely excited to witness the positive, long-term impact this empowerment will have on the lives of individuals with disabilities across Eswatini.
Also said that “this investment in our educators is a direct investment in a more inclusive and compassionate future for our nation.”
By the conclusion of this comprehensive training, the 12 participating schools will be anchored by coaches who are well-equipped to provide a supportive and inclusive environment. These mentors will play a pivotal role in promoting equal opportunities, ensuring that the talents of all athletes are showcased on a national stage.
