MBABANE–Inmates at Mbabane Correctional Centre found renewed purpose on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 when Campus Crusade for Christ screened The Passion of the Christ at the facility, an initiative aimed at promoting spiritual growth, rehabilitation and positive behavioural change among incarcerated individuals.
The programme, held within the correctional centre and attended by inmates and officers, forms part of ongoing efforts to integrate faith-based approaches into rehabilitation systems. Organisers explained that the use of film provides a relatable and impactful way to communicate messages of forgiveness, sacrifice and accountability, which are key elements in personal transformation.
During the screening, many inmates were visibly moved by the film’s portrayal of suffering and redemption. Following the session, participants engaged in guided discussions and prayer, where they reflected on their personal journeys and expressed a desire to change their lives. Facilitators encouraged open dialogue, allowing inmates to connect the film’s themes to their own experiences and future aspirations.
Correctional officers reported a calm and reflective atmosphere after the event, noting improved behaviour and increased willingness among inmates to engage in constructive conversations. Some officers indicated that such initiatives help to build mutual respect and promote a sense of unity within the facility.
Officials at Mbabane Correctional Centre highlighted the importance of addressing not only physical confinement but also the emotional and spiritual needs of inmates. They emphasised that faith-driven programmes complement formal rehabilitation strategies by fostering discipline, responsibility and a sense of purpose.
The partnership between correctional services and community organisations reflects a broader commitment to holistic rehabilitation. By instilling positive values and encouraging self-reflection, initiatives like this play a crucial role in preparing inmates for successful reintegration into society and reducing the likelihood of reoffending.
