…. Local race opens pathway to global running stage, three years after Comrades Marathon recognition

MBABANE– The Imbube Marathon has reached a major milestone after being officially recognised as a qualifying race for the Two Oceans Marathon, one of Africa’s most prestigious road running events.
The announcement, issued by the Eswatini National Provident Fund (ENPF) in May 2026, signals a significant boost for Eswatini’s athletics community, offering local runners a direct pathway to qualify for the internationally acclaimed race, often referred to as “the world’s most beautiful marathon”.
Set to take place on 17 October 2026 at Somhlolo National Stadium, the Imbube Marathon is now positioned as a key event on the regional running calendar. This recognition builds on an earlier milestone achieved in 2023, when the race was also accredited as a qualifier for the Comrades Marathon.
Elevating Eswatini’s running profile
The new qualifying status elevates the Imbube Marathon beyond a local sporting event, placing it firmly on the national and regional athletics map. Runners can now compete on home soil while working towards qualifying times required for participation in the Two Oceans Marathon.
Organisers say the development reflects growing recognition of the quality and standards of the race, as well as the increasing interest in long-distance running within Eswatini.
“This means your journey to the world’s most beautiful marathon can start right here on our soil,” organisers said.
Gateway to Cape Town’s iconic race
The Two Oceans Marathon, held annually in Cape Town, attracts thousands of runners from across the globe. Established in 1970, the event features a 56-kilometre ultra-marathon and a 21.1-kilometre half marathon, both renowned for their scenic yet demanding routes.
Participants traverse some of South Africa’s most iconic landscapes, including Chapman’s Peak Drive, Muizenberg and Constantia Nek, making the race a favourite among elite athletes and recreational runners alike.
The ultra-marathon requires strict qualifying times, making events like the Imbube Marathon essential stepping stones for those aiming to compete at this level.
Building on Comrades Marathon recognition
The Imbube Marathon’s growing reputation is further strengthened by its status as an official qualifier for the Comrades Marathon, one of the world’s most iconic endurance races sterted to honour World War I soldiers.
The Comrades Marathon, first run in 1921, covers approximately 85 to 90 kilometres between Durban and Pietermaritzburg and is widely regarded as the ultimate test of endurance.
This dual recognition enhances the appeal of the Imbube Marathon, positioning it as a key qualifying event for runners targeting both major South African races.
