MBABANE – Eswatini joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Environment Day on June 5, 2026, as communities, schools, municipalities and private companies intensified efforts to promote environmental conservation through tree planting, clean-up campaigns and climate action initiatives across the country.
The nationwide activities reflected a growing commitment among Emaswati to protect the environment and support efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change through practical action.
In Nhlangano, community members took part in a cleanup campaign that saw residents work together to remove litter and improve the cleanliness of the town. Organisers described the initiative as a demonstration of collective responsibility and a reminder that everyone has a role to play in creating a cleaner and healthier environment.
Participants emphasised that environmental protection begins with everyday actions and that maintaining clean communities contributes significantly to public health, environmental sustainability and community pride.
Meanwhile, Ezulwini Municipality, in partnership with PELUM Eswatini and other stakeholders, commemorated the day under the global theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”
The event brought together representatives from government, educational institutions, businesses, community organisations and environmental groups to promote environmental stewardship and climate action.
As part of the celebrations, participants were given indigenous plants and trees to take home and plant, symbolising a shared commitment to preserving natural resources and creating greener communities.
Ezulwini Municipality expressed appreciation to all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the event, noting that collaboration remains essential in addressing environmental challenges and building a sustainable future.
Further strengthening the country’s environmental efforts, early this week Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation (RES) donated 150 trees to Usutu Forest School International and Thembelisha Preparatory School in support of Government’s national tree-planting programme.
The donation comprised a mix of indigenous and fruit-bearing trees aimed at promoting environmental conservation, biodiversity and food security within school communities.
Receiving the donation, school representatives welcomed the initiative and highlighted the important role trees play in sustaining life, improving air quality and creating healthier environments for future generations.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, RES Property Manager Mlungisi Simelane said the company remained committed to supporting initiatives that protect the environment and benefit communities.
“Trees are essential for life. They help conserve nature, improve air quality, combat climate change, prevent soil erosion and provide habitats for wildlife. By planting trees today, we are investing in a greener and more sustainable tomorrow,” he said.
The activities held across the country reinforced Government’s call for individuals, communities, institutions and businesses to actively participate in environmental conservation and tree-planting initiatives.
As World Environment Day was commemorated, stakeholders reiterated that safeguarding the environment requires collective action and long-term commitment, with every tree planted and every cleanup campaign contributing to a more sustainable and climate-resilient future for Eswatini.
