JOHANNESBURG – For many Emaswati living in the bustling streets of Johannesburg, home is not only a place on a map — it is a feeling, a language, a song and the familiar faces that remind them where they come from.
That feeling will come alive on Saturday, 1 August 2026, when Umgidvo Wakangwane takes over Johannesburg, bringing together the Swazi community for a celebration of music, culture and connection away from home.
The event, founded by Swazi-born DJ and organiser Similolesihle Mthethwa, also known as MilotionDJ, is set to revive the spirit of a gathering that once united thousands of Emaswati living in South Africa.
For Mthethwa, Umgidvo Wakangwane is not just another party on the calendar — it is a homecoming experience for people who carry Eswatini in their hearts while building their lives across the border.
“Many of us have careers, businesses and families here in Gauteng, but our hearts are still deeply connected to Eswatini,” said Mthethwa.
The idea was born from a shared desire among Emaswati in Johannesburg to create a space where they could freely speak Siswati, reconnect with old friends, meet new faces and celebrate their roots.
The event was inherited from the vision of Yakhe Mamba and Banele Mkhatshwa, who previously created a platform for the Swazi community in Johannesburg before COVID-19 interrupted its growth. Mthethwa believes the time has come to bring back that energy and rebuild the gathering into a bigger cultural movement.
“The aim is to bring back the event to its peak and revive the external activities that come with it. We wanted something that belongs to us — something that celebrates who we are as Emaswati,” he said.
The celebration will be powered by a vibrant musical line-up, with Amapiano star Daliwonga leading the entertainment charge. Joining him will be DJ Bloss, Thubillion, Yamkela, 1D and Milotion Swazi, who are expected to keep the crowd moving throughout the experience.
Beyond the music, Mthethwa said the heart of Umgidvo Wakangwane lies in creating unforgettable moments of unity.
“It is about bringing people home without them having to cross the border,” he said.
With Johannesburg’s Swazi community expected to gather in numbers, the event aims to become an annual celebration that supports Swazi talent, entrepreneurs and cultural pride.
Tickets are available through Quicket, with early bird tickets priced at R40, general tickets at R50, and tickets at the door available for R70.
Limited VIP table packages are also available, including Kokana tables priced at R5 500, offering VIP entry, a tab, complimentary hubbly and a designated waiter.
As the countdown begins, Umgidvo Wakangwane promises to turn Johannesburg into a little piece of Eswatini — where music speaks, memories are created and Emaswati celebrate the bond that connects them, no matter how far from home they may be.
