MALKERNS – Every stitch carried a story, every pattern reflected a heritage, and every garment celebrated the beauty of African identity as acclaimed South African designer Mzukisi Mbane brought his creative vision to life on the Luju 2026 fashion runway.
Reflecting on the second day of the 2026 Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival on August 2, 2026, Mbane said his showcase was inspired by the question of who people are, where they come from and the stories that connect communities.
The founder and creative director of Imprint South Africa headlined the festival’s fashion showcase at House on Fire, delivering a collection deeply rooted in identity and origin while bringing this year’s theme, Kwasukasukela: Once Upon a Time, to life.
Mbane said his designs were a reflection of African heritage, creativity and the power of storytelling through fashion.
“My inspiration comes from who we are and where we come from,” said Mbane. “African fashion is beautiful, highly inspired and creative. Everyone is unique, and through fashion we are able to express those stories.”
The runway became a vibrant cultural canvas as models showcased garments featuring bold structural prints, contemporary silhouettes and designs that blended traditional influences with modern high fashion.
For Mbane, fashion goes beyond clothing. It is a tool for preserving history, celebrating culture and creating conversations between generations.
His collection aligned perfectly with Luju’s creative direction of using fashion as a cultural portal, transforming traditional stories, folklore and African heritage into contemporary expressions.
Mbane, who is known for his Afro-futuristic aesthetic, has established himself as one of the region’s leading designers through his ability to merge cultural storytelling with luxury fashion. His brand philosophy, “Leave a Mark,” reflects his belief that every design should carry meaning and create a lasting impression.
Fresh from winning Africa Fashion Up 2026 and being named South Africa’s Best Heritage & Cultural Designer, Mbane brought his award-winning craftsmanship to Eswatini, leaving festival-goers inspired by his unique interpretation of African fashion.
The Luju fashion programme also provided a platform for regional and local talent. Alongside Mbane, Mozambican designer King Levi of XIGUBO showcased his work, while 12 Eswatini designers, including Zen Shiva of Zerushi, were featured after receiving mentorship and technical support through the expanded Luju Fashion Programme.
Mbane said being part of a festival that celebrates love, peace and hope was a meaningful experience.
“I’m glad to be here at a festival which is celebrating love, peace and hope. I’m here so that I can express, see and share,” he said.
As the final designs flowed across the House on Fire runway, Mbane left audiences with a powerful reminder that fashion is a living archive — carrying the voices, memories and dreams of a people.
Through his collection, the Luju 2026 fashion headliner proved that African identity remains one of the greatest sources of creative inspiration.
