MALKERNS– The music may be fading after a colourful weekend at the Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival, but Eswatini’s season of celebration is far from over as anticipation begins to build for the 2026 Umhlanga Reed Dance set to take place from the 25th to the 31st of August.
Under the theme “Kwasukasukela: A Return to the African Future,” Luju brought together music, food, fashion and creativity while celebrating African identity through both tradition and modern expression. Now, as the festival atmosphere settles, the country is preparing for another powerful celebration of identity one rooted in culture, heritage and generations of tradition.
The journey from Luju to Umhlanga may appear to be a shift from entertainment to culture, but the two celebrations are connected by a shared story: honouring where Africa comes from while carrying its identity into the future.
If Kwasukasukela invited festival-goers to look back at African roots while imagining what lies ahead, Umhlanga brings that idea to life through a tradition that continues to be practised, protected and passed down from one generation to the next.
As preparations continue, the sounds of festival stages will gradually give way to the voices of maidens singing traditional songs. The excitement of live performances will make space for rehearsals, cultural gatherings and the journey towards the annual Reed Dance ceremony.
Across Eswatini, the build-up is beginning to take shape as maidens prepare to take part in one of the country’s most significant cultural ceremonies. For many young women, Umhlanga is more than a gathering. It is a space to learn about tradition, celebrate cultural identity and become part of a legacy carried by generations before them.
The ceremony also reflects the idea of an African future that remains connected to its roots. While the world continues to change, Umhlanga stands as a reminder that culture is not only something preserved from the past but something that continues to live through the people who practise it.
As Eswatini moves from the vibrant energy of Luju into the build-up towards Umhlanga, the country’s celebration takes on a different rhythm one carried by traditional songs, unity and cultural pride. The festival lights may be dimming, but another celebration is beginning to rise. From Kwasukasukela to Umhlanga, the journey continues looking back, moving forward and carrying Eswatini’s cultural heritage into the future.
