PIGG’S PEAK – The Pigg’s Peak Clean-Up Campaign took a community-centred approach to promoting environmental cleanliness by combining awareness with football, as a tournament was held at Killarney Sports Ground on Saturday.
The football tournament featured two matches, with the first game involving Malanti Chiefs FC and Pigg’s Peak Professionals, while Kamhlushwa Real Madrid faced Mbabane Swallows FC in the second fixture.
The tournament formed part of the broader Pigg’s Peak Clean-Up Campaign, using sport as a platform to attract residents and encourage greater community participation in keeping the town clean.
The campaign comes against the background of Pigg’s Peak Town Council’s long-standing efforts to improve waste management and public cleanliness. The council’s Integrated Waste Management Plan notes that the town has previously undertaken clean-up and awareness campaigns involving residents, schools and councillors, while also highlighting the need for sustained public participation to maintain cleanliness.
The need for continued action has also been highlighted by recent developments in the town. In May 2026, Select Limited donated waste bins to Pigg’s Peak, alongside Matsapha and Siteki, as part of an initiative aimed at encouraging responsible waste disposal. The company said proper waste management requires cooperation between local authorities, businesses, residents and other stakeholders.
The Piggs Peak Town Council continues to provide municipal services including waste collection, while its official profile describes Pigg’s Peak as a 856.6-hectare town in northern Hhohho.
The clean-up campaign also comes at a time when environmental management is receiving increased attention nationally. In April 2026, Eswatini launched a five-year, US$4.9 million initiative supported by the Global Environment Facility and implemented with the United Nations Development Programme and national environmental authorities. The project seeks to reduce risks to human health and the environment associated with chemicals and waste management.
For Pigg’s Peak, initiatives such as the clean-up campaign highlight the importance of making environmental responsibility part of everyday community life rather than treating cleanliness as an occasional exercise.
By bringing football, community participation and environmental awareness together, the campaign provided an opportunity to reach residents through an activity that attracts people across different age groups.
The challenge now is to ensure that the enthusiasm generated by the campaign translates into sustained action, including responsible disposal of waste, protection of public spaces and greater cooperation between residents, businesses and the municipality.
