MBABANE— The Eswatini Youth Employment Opportunities Project (EYEOP) is creating new pathways for young EmaSwati to earn a living through agriculture, entrepreneurship, skills development and improved access to markets.
Speaking during a live appearance on the Kusile Breakfast Show at the Mavuso Trade Fair this morning, Thulasizwe Simelane from the Eswatini Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (EWADE) highlighted the opportunities available through the programme, particularly for young people interested in starting agricultural businesses.
Simelane said EYEOP was established to respond to challenges faced by young people, including unemployment, limited access to business loans, difficulties in reaching markets and the low number of sustainable businesses being established by the youth.
He encouraged young EmaSwati to consider agriculture as a viable business opportunity, noting that the sector can provide young people with practical ways to generate income while contributing to the country’s agricultural development.
The programme is aimed at young people facing different challenges in accessing economic opportunities. According to Simelane, EYEOP is designed to walk alongside beneficiaries as they develop their agricultural enterprises, from gaining knowledge and skills to finding markets for their products.
“Young people should start businesses in agriculture,” Simelane said, emphasising the importance of viewing farming not only as a source of food but also as a potential business venture.
Through the programme, beneficiaries who require agricultural training will receive guidance to help them develop their knowledge and begin their entrepreneurial journey. EYEOP will also assist participants in connecting with markets where they can sell their agricultural products.
Simelane further stressed that young people living with disabilities will not be left behind, with the programme seeking to ensure that they also have opportunities to participate and build sustainable livelihoods.
To qualify for the programme, applicants must be EmaSwati aged between 18 and 35 years.
The EYEOP initiative reflects efforts to equip young people with practical skills while addressing barriers that can prevent them from turning their ideas into sustainable businesses.
By combining training, entrepreneurship support and market linkages, the programme aims to help young EmaSwati move from having potential to creating real economic opportunities for themselves and their communities.
