EZULWINI –Taiwan President Lai Ching-te has described His Majesty King Mswati III as a visionary and kind leader whose development-driven approach continues to transform Eswatini’s economic landscape
The Taiwanese leader said this on May 3, 2026, after touring the Ezulwini Palazzo ( International Convention Centre).
Speaking during his state visit, President Lai expressed heartfelt gratitude to His Majesty King Mswati III for the warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation, as well as to Indlovukazi and Cabinet Ministers for their reception.
“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to His Majesty King Mswati III, Her Majesty Indlovukazi and the Government of Eswatini for warmly welcoming us to this beautiful country,” he said, adding appreciation.
The Taiwanese leader said agreements signed with His Majesty upon his arrival would further strengthen diplomatic ties between Eswatini and Taiwan, noting that the long-standing relationship remains firm and unshaken.
President Lai commended the King’s foresight, citing major national projects such as the Strategic Oil Reserve Facility at Phuzumoya in Siphofaneni. The E5.2 billion project, being developed with Taiwanese expertise, is designed to store up to 80 million litres of fuel, ensuring a 60-day national supply and safeguarding the country against fuel shortages during global disruptions.
He said such initiatives demonstrate the King’s commitment to securing Eswatini’s future. “This project will be crucial during difficult times, such as global conflicts, and will contribute significantly to economic growth and stability,” he said.
The President also praised the development of the Eswatini International Convention Centre, describing it as a world-class facility that meets international standards and has the potential to position Eswatini as a global conference hub.
He said the ICC, with its ability to host up to 1 500 delegates in its main conference hall and smaller meetings of about 200 people, reflects the King’s vision for infrastructure that supports economic growth. He further applauded the incorporation of local artwork within the facility, noting it would offer visitors a cultural experience akin to a museum.
President Lai also expressed admiration for His Majesty’s personal involvement in the design of some aspects of the ICC, saying it reflects a hands-on leadership style.
He reaffirmed Taiwan’s strong friendship with Eswatini, saying the two nations are not competitors but partners bound by shared values and mutual respect. “Eswatini and Taiwan are like family. To all emaSwati, Taiwan is your second home,” he said.
The President further revealed that he was pleased to learn that Their Majesties are expected to visit Taiwan, adding that preparations would include serving the Indlovukazi’s favourite meal.
He noted that for over four decades, Eswatini has experienced notable progress under the leadership of His Majesty King Mswati III, whose development agenda continues to prioritise the welfare of emaSwati.
President Lai concluded by emphasising that the diplomatic relations between Eswatini and Taiwan will remain steadfast and unaffected by external pressures, reaffirming his country’s commitment to continued collaboration for the benefit of both nations.
