PIGGS PEAK– Budgeting is essential for every successful business. The Komati Basin Water Authority (KOBWA) has strengthened the financial management capacity of its management team and budget holders through a two-day budget training workshop held at Piggs Peak Hotel.
The training was aimed at equipping participants with practical skills to improve budget preparation, implementation, monitoring and reporting, while promoting greater accountability in the use of organisational resources.
The workshop forms part of KOBWA’s efforts to strengthen internal financial management and ensure that its resources are planned and utilised effectively in support of the organisation’s strategic objectives.
Key areas covered during the training included budget planning and preparation, implementation, monitoring, financial reporting and accountability. The sessions also provided an opportunity for management and budget holders to strengthen their understanding of their responsibilities in ensuring that financial resources are aligned with planned activities and priorities.
KOBWA plays an important role in the development and management of water resources in the Komati River Basin. The bi-national authority was established through the 1992 Komati River Basin Treaty between Eswatini and South Africa and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Maguga and Driekoppies dams and related infrastructure.
Financial management is therefore an important component of KOBWA’s operations. Its Finance Department is responsible for areas including budgeting, financing development projects, procurement and financial control.
The organisation’s strategic objectives include optimising its financial resources, improving business processes and ensuring the effective management of water and infrastructure to meet its current and future mandate.
The two-day training is expected to contribute to these objectives by strengthening the ability of managers and budget holders to make informed financial decisions and monitor expenditure against approved plans.
It also reinforces the importance of accountability and transparency within the organisation, ensuring that financial resources are directed towards activities that contribute to KOBWA’s mandate and service delivery.
The workshop demonstrates KOBWA’s continued investment in employee development and institutional capacity, recognising that a skilled workforce is essential to effective organisational performance and sustainable management of water resources.
