MANZINI – Good music, good food and a picnic basket what more could a Saturday need? Forget the rush of the usual weekend plans; this time, the invitation is to pack a picnic basket, dress in white and let the music take over.

That is the mood behind the Soul & R&B All White Picnic, which is set to turn Ekupholeni Garden into an outdoor meeting point for music lovers on 19 September.

Rather than following the familiar club formula, the event combines music with the simple pleasures of a picnic spending time outdoors, sharing food, catching up with friends and enjoying a soundtrack that moves between soul and R&B.

The programme will run from 12 noon until midnight, giving the gathering enough time to move from a relaxed afternoon setting into an evening of music and dancing. DJ Young leads the line-up, with Crooks, Master P, Uncle Karly, Young Love, Sixo and MK Lkhophe also billed to feature.

The all-white theme adds another layer to the occasion. Guests will be dressed in white while the garden provides the backdrop, creating a setting that is as much about the atmosphere as it is about the music.

For some, the appeal may be the chance to hear DJs such as DJ Young and Crooks in a setting that feels less like a conventional nightlife outing. For others, it is simply an excuse to gather with friends, bring out the picnic spirit and spend a few hours away from the usual routine.

The event also reflects the growing appetite for social gatherings that combine entertainment with an experience. Instead of making the music the only reason to attend, the picnic concept gives people room to eat, talk, relax and eventually get on their feet.

Tickets cost E150 in advance, rising to E200 at the gate, according to the event poster. With spring settling in, the timing could hardly be more fitting. A garden, an all-white crowd and a day-to-night selection of soul and R&B gives the weekend a different rhythm. And when the clock eventually reaches midnight, the baskets may be empty, but the playlist will have done its job.
