MLAWULA – The funniest moments at Friday night’s comedy session did not always come from the stage. Sometimes, they happened right in the middle of the crowd.
The Mlawula Campfire Festival’s comedy night turned into a lively mix of jokes, music and audience interaction as comedians and performers repeatedly pulled festival-goers into the action. South African comedian Matewu Bhoza was among those who took to the stage, bringing his comedy to a crowd that had gathered for an evening of laughs as part of the festival programme.
But it was local comedy duo Gogo and Slwane who took the interaction to another level. Moving around the audience rather than staying behind the microphone, the pair turned unsuspecting festival-goers into part of the performance, creating spontaneous moments that had the crowd laughing along. The duo even shifted gears at one point, inviting the audience to dance to “Hamba” by the Qwabe Twins. What had started as a comedy routine briefly became a dance session, with festival-goers joining in.
Music continued to weave its way through the night, with Cedric stepping up with That’isgubhu, adding another energetic moment to a programme that refused to stay within the boundaries of stand-up comedy. Young Zesh later brought his own energy to the stage, keeping the audience engaged as the evening moved between comedy, music and performance.
What stood out was the lack of distance between the performers and their audience. Festival-goers were not simply watching from their seats; they were dancing, reacting, answering back and, at times, becoming the punchline themselves. That made the comedy night feel less like a conventional show and more like a shared experience the kind where the best moments cannot always be planned.
With the Mlawula Campfire Festival continuing through its wider programme of outdoor activities and entertainment, Friday night showed that sometimes the easiest way to bring people together is simply to give them something to laugh about.
