MBABANE- The Director of International Trade, Lungile Dlamini, on behalf of the Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Trade, officially opened the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Advanced Training on Rules of Origin on 22 September 2025. The session aims to equip participants with vital skills to facilitate trade efficiently and effectively under regional and continental agreements.

Dlamini extended gratitude to the European Union, GIZ, and the WCO for their continued support, highlighting the EU’s strong commitment to Eswatini’s development.

In August, Eswatini hosted the intermediate training at the Eswatini Revenue Service headquarters, emphasising the importance of continuity between the Ministry and Customs. Today’s advanced session builds on that foundation, preparing officials to handle complex trade procedures, especially in key sectors such as textiles, clothing, and the automotive industry.

The Principal Secretary highlighted the critical role of Rules of Origin under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Determining product nationality is central to accessing preferential trade benefits, developing value chains, and ensuring fair revenue collection.

Participants will also gain practical experience through factory and office visits, strengthening their knowledge of verification processes and certificate

The WCO Advanced Training complements Eswatini’s wider strategy to modernise trade processes and ensure compliance with international standards. By deepening officials’ expertise in Rules of Origin, the country can better assist local exporters in meeting requirements for regional and continental markets, ultimately boosting trade competitiveness.

The session also serves as a platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing among trade and customs officials. Networking opportunities during the training are expected to enhance coordination between the Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Trade and the Eswatini Revenue Service, supporting more efficient and transparent trade facilitation nationwide.

Appreciation was extended to the AfCFTA and SADC Secretariats for their ongoing support, which continues to enhance Eswatini’s capacity to benefit fully from regional and continental trade agreements.
