MANZINI — At Asante Guesthouse, guests found more than a place to stay, they stepped into a gallery alive with stories of growth, healing, and artistic vision during the “Becoming: A Visual Diary” exhibition.
Over four days from June 27 to 30, the guesthouse hosted a showcase by five up-and-coming Eswatini artists: Mzwandile Moletsane, Siyanda Dlamini, Neliso Mdluli, Sambulo Shongwe and Shepard Sikhondze. More than 100 visitors came to experience the vibrant, deeply personal works that transformed the guesthouse’s walls.
For Asante Guesthouse Managing Director Benzile Kuzwayo-Quashie, hosting the exhibition was part of rethinking what hospitality can be.
“We believe in being more than a place to sleep,” she said. “We want to be part of Eswatini’s artistic community and support young creatives. It’s about offering guests something meaningful, a connection to our culture.”
By showcasing local art, Asante isn’t just decorating its spaces. It’s investing in the country’s cultural economy and helping young artists find new audiences and opportunities to sell their work.
“Our walls are living walls,” Kuzwayo-Quashie added. “When you hang a story there, it speaks to someone.”
Artist and co-organiser Mzwandile Moletsane said the idea behind “Becoming” was to give artists space to share honest, vulnerable journeys.
“We wanted to exhibit our personal evolution,” he explained. “The themes ranged from trauma to unity, love to dreams. It was about breathing, reflecting and connecting.”
Guests and visitors encountered works exploring love, loss, identity, and hope, sparking conversations that went far beyond surface impressions. In these exchanges, the exhibition blurred the line between gallery and guesthouse, turning Asante into a meeting point for community and culture.
The success of “Becoming” has inspired plans to expand the platform to more local artists, positioning Asante as a catalyst for creative growth. If this exhibition is any indication, the guesthouse is well on its way to proving that places of hospitality can also be spaces for cultural transformation, where art is not just viewed, but lived.
