MANZINI – Fifty years is a long time to keep a song alive, but for Asihlabelele Choral Society, the music has continued to find its way into the lives of generations.
The Society marked its Golden Jubilee at SANU, bringing together music, tradition and memories as it celebrated five decades of its journey in Eswatini’s choral music scene.
The anniversary was more than a celebration of reaching the 50-year mark. It was also a moment to look back at the voices, performances and musical experiences that have shaped the society over the years. Local choirs joined the occasion, adding their own harmonies to a celebration that placed choral music at the centre of the gathering.
For a society that has existed across five decades, the anniversary also reflects how choral music can outlive individual performers and continue through different generations. Voices change, members come and go, but the music creates a thread connecting those who sang before with those carrying it forward. The celebration included a symbolic cutting of a Golden Jubilee cake, with the number 50 taking centre stage as members and guests marked the milestone.
The occasion also highlighted the place Asihlabelele Choral Society has carved within Eswatini’s choral music landscape, with the anniversary providing an opportunity to honour its long-standing commitment to the craft.
Five decades of singing inevitably carry more than performances. They carry friendships, rehearsals, stages, competitions, celebrations and memories shared through music.
At SANU, those memories came together for a celebration that showed that for Asihlabelele, the story is not simply about how long the choir has existed, but about the music and people that have kept it going for half a century.
