LUYENGO – On May 9, 2025, the stage at the University of Eswatini’s annual Mr and Miss UNESWA competition sparkled with excitement, and in the end, it was Ayanda Shabangu who emerged victorious, crowned as Miss UNESWA 2025.
But her journey is about so much more than just a title – it’s a story of hope, resilience, and a fierce determination to uplift others.
Currently in her second year studying for a Bachelor of Sciences in Food Science, Nutrition, and Technology at the Luyengo Campus, Shabangu’s victory was a reflection of both her personal strength and her deep commitment to making a difference within her community. Winning the title was nothing short of emotional. “When they called my name, I couldn’t believe it,” she says, her voice tinged with emotion. “It was a rollercoaster of excitement, gratitude, and disbelief. But most of all, I felt empowered.”
For Shabangu, the journey to becoming Miss UNESWA was a leap of faith. Although she’s always had a passion for modeling, it was the encouragement of her close friend, Temashabalala Mabuza that pushed her into the world of pageantry. “I never imagined I would be in this position, but my friends and my community really pushed me to go for it. Their support kept me going, especially when I was feeling nervous,” Shabangu shares. One of her biggest supporters, her friend Njabulo Shongwe aka Bambo, even left her heartfelt notes of encouragement throughout the competition.
But for Shabangu, the title is not just about the crown – it’s about creating a platform for others to be seen and heard. “I’ve always felt that there are students who go unnoticed or feel like they don’t belong,” she says. “I want to be the voice for them, to show everyone that they matter, that they are valued.”
As Miss UNESWA, Shabangu plans to build a more inclusive and welcoming campus culture where students can express themselves freely and support each other. She is passionate about mental health advocacy, student-driven initiatives, and fostering a spirit of charity. “I want to work alongside various student groups to understand their needs and make sure that every student feels they belong,” she says.
For Shabangu, empowerment starts with authenticity. “You don’t have to be perfect to be powerful,” she reflects. “What matters most is having a purpose and staying true to who you are. If you can share your story and be open about your struggles, you inspire others to believe in themselves.”
Shabangu’s message to her fellow students is one of hope and perseverance. “University life can be tough, but I want to remind my peers that better days are ahead,” she says, urging students to have faith, trust the process, and always put God first.
Through her journey, Ayanda Shabangu has become more than just a beauty queen—she’s a beacon of hope, a voice for the unheard, and a champion for change. With her unwavering commitment to uplifting her peers and fostering a positive, inclusive environment, Ayanda Shabangu is truly a role model and an inspiring leader for students at UNESWA and beyond.
