MANZINI– The introduction of biometric technology is set to improve voter registration in Eswatini as the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) rolls out Continuous Voter Registration ahead of the 2028 national elections.
EBC Deputy Chairperson Sipho Tembe said the use of computers and biometric systems would support the capturing of voter information as the commission implements the new registration approach.
Speaking during the Kusile Breakfast Show, Tembe discussed the progress of Continuous Voter Registration and the experiences emerging as communities adjust to the new system. He said the continuous registration process was aimed at registering citizens who had recently turned 18, as well as those who had moved from one constituency to another. The biometric system is also intended to help prevent duplicate registration and ensure that voter information is captured properly.
Tembe acknowledged that the introduction of new technology could require communities to adjust, particularly for people who were accustomed to traditional methods of voter registration. He said it could take time for people to understand and become familiar with the new systems, making civic and voter education an important part of the registration process.
He also highlighted the importance of established structures in addressing challenges that may arise within communities during registration. He said disagreements could sometimes occur in communities where there were different views over whether a person should be served in one area or another.
“Every Swati aged 18 and above has the right to register to vote and should not be prevented from exercising that right because of personal views” he said. The appropriate structures were in place to assist in addressing such challenges and ensure that eligible citizens were able to register.
Continuous Voter Registration forms part of preparations for the 2028 elections, with the process beginning ahead of the election period rather than waiting until closer to the polls. Starting the registration process early would help reduce the pressure associated with registering large numbers of voters as elections approach.
The combination of biometric technology, civic education and established community structures is therefore expected to support a smoother voter registration process as Eswatini prepares for the 2028 elections.
