MBABANE– In a world often dominated by economic uncertainty, a new vision is emerging: countries are exploring Bitcoin as a strategic reserve to strengthen their finances and secure a brighter future.

This innovative approach is offering hope that national budgets could stabilise, debt could shrink, and prosperity could be within reach for all.

Dr. Saifedean Ammous, economist and author of The Bitcoin Standard, highlighted this potential in May 2023 while advising El Salvador. He remarked:

“If you continue to accumulate Bitcoin for the next five years, there is a good chance that El Salvador will be debt-free.”

El Salvador, which adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021, has been steadily accumulating the cryptocurrency, demonstrating how strategic digital asset management could transform a nation’s finances. The Central American republic is said to be accumulating at least one bitcoin since 2021.

Other nations are following similar paths. The Kingdom of Bhutan, for example, has quietly built significant Bitcoin reserves through renewable energy-powered mining. Analysts estimate these holdings could be worth hundreds of millions, providing the kingdom with a powerful tool for economic resilience.

In 2023, Bhutan was able to double salaries of its civil servants using this cryptocurrency. According to a report carries by Al Jazeera in April 2025, Since then, the Bhutan Broadcasting Corporation (BBS) reported a marginal decline in civil servants quitting their jobs. In the first quarter of 2024, 500 civil servants resigned, compared with the nearly 1 900 who resigned in the same period in 2023.

Brazil is also taking steps to incorporate Bitcoin into its national treasury, while countries in Europe, including the Czech Republic and Switzerland, are actively exploring strategies to diversify national reserves with digital assets. These efforts signal a growing global recognition that Bitcoin can be more than a speculative investment—it can be a stabilising force for national economies.

The broader message is clear: with thoughtful, strategic adoption of technology, countries can reduce debt, strengthen their budgets, and create more secure futures for their citizens. For people around the world, these developments offer a renewed sense of hope: innovation and vision can translate into tangible economic stability, shared prosperity, and a brighter, more resilient world.
