MANZINI— A career dedicated to shaping Eswatini’s choral music scene received recognition on Saturday when Bokamoso Arts Institute honoured seasoned choral leader and advocate Dr Hugh Magagula during its Lost In Music Concert at Esibayeni Lodge.
Magagula’s recognition placed the spotlight on a figure whose work has extended beyond the conductor’s podium into the development of musicians, composers and other professionals within the choral sector.
His contribution has been closely linked to the growth of SiSwati choral music, particularly through his advocacy for original vernacular compositions and his mentorship of people working across different areas of the genre.
Over the years, his influence has also been felt in the development of choral competitions, where platforms for young musicians have helped nurture talent and create opportunities for performers to gain experience and recognition.
One of the initiatives associated with Magagula’s career is the Eswatini Bank Schools Choral Music Competition, which he helped establish in 2005. The competition created a platform for school musicians to develop their abilities while introducing young performers to competitive choral music.
His work, however, has not been limited to performance and mentorship. Magagula has also contributed to SiSwati literature, including co-editing Sabalala Misebe, a collection of SiSwati poetry, and authoring Wena Bewungatsini.
The honour at the Lost In Music Concert therefore reflected a career that has crossed several parts of the creative sector, from choral leadership and music development to literary work.
Bokamoso Arts Institute’s recognition also came during a concert built around live musical performance, making the tribute part of an evening that celebrated the wider contribution of artists and cultural practitioners.
For Magagula, the moment offered an opportunity for his contribution to Eswatini’s choral landscape to be acknowledged in front of an audience gathered to celebrate music.
