LOBAMBA – Minister of Labour and Social Security Phila Buthelezi drew laughter and applause in the House of Assembly when he suggested that many Members of Parliament could secure re-election next term due to the impact of the 2026 National Budget.
Speaking during debate on the National Budget Speech delivered by Neal Rijkenberg on 27 February 2026, Buthelezi praised the Minister of Finance for presenting what he described as a balanced and people-centred budget. He said the allocations signalled improved service delivery and tangible development across the country.
Buthelezi noted that the increment allocated to his ministry would assist in addressing key priorities, including support towards UNESWA tuition. He emphasised that investing in education and social security reflects Government’s commitment to empowering Emaswati and strengthening livelihoods.
Highlighting community development, the minister pointed to the increase in funding for Microprojects from E180 million to E300 million. He said the expanded allocation would significantly enhance infrastructure development in constituencies nationwide, bringing visible progress to communities. According to Buthelezi, such improvements could inspire renewed public confidence in legislators.
He further welcomed the allocation of about E2 billion for road infrastructure, describing it as unprecedented. Improved roads, he said, would stimulate economic activity, improve connectivity and enhance service delivery in both rural and urban areas.
Drawing from his experience as Member of Parliament for Matsanjeni North Constituency, Buthelezi reflected on past trends where fewer than 10 per cent of MPs typically returned to Parliament in the following term. However, he expressed optimism that this cycle could be different.
“In my experience, less than 10 per cent of MPs made it back to Parliament in the next term. This time, I see that number rising well above 10 per cent,” he remarked, attributing his optimism to what he views as strengthened service delivery under the current budget.
Buthelezi concluded by calling for cooperation among all legislators to ensure that the allocated funds translate into meaningful development outcomes. He stressed that unity and collaboration would be essential in delivering results that improve the lives of citizens.
The debate reflected strong engagement from MPs, with many expressing hope that the 2026 budget would accelerate national development and leave a lasting positive impact across constituencies.
