EZULWINI– Tax compliance is not merely an administrative or back-office function but a vital nation-building responsibility that supports public services, infrastructure and economic development, Eswatini Revenue Service (ERS) Governing Board Chairperson David Dlamini has said.
Speaking at the 4th Annual ERS Client Appreciation Day held at Happy Valley Hotel in Ezulwini on Friday evening, Dlamini said taxpayers who consistently meet their obligations play a critical role in building the country’s future.
Addressing government leaders, business executives, development partners and taxpayers, Dlamini said this year’s theme, “Stars of Compliance: Honouring Clients Who Build Eswatini,” highlights the importance of voluntary tax compliance beyond legal requirements.
“Compliance is not just a back-office issue. It is a nation-building act which supports the public services, infrastructure and development priorities that touch the lives of EmaSwati every day,” he said.
The annual event recognises individuals, companies and institutions that consistently comply with tax and customs obligations while promoting a culture of voluntary compliance.
Dlamini commended the award recipients for filing tax returns on time, making timely payments, submitting accurate declarations and maintaining good standing with the revenue authority. He said their commitment demonstrates that responsible business practices and good citizenship go hand in hand.
He also acknowledged the contribution of government institutions, business associations, professional bodies, financial institutions, development partners and the media in strengthening public understanding of taxation and encouraging compliance across the country.
The Board Chairperson further welcomed the participation of South African Revenue Service Commissioner Dr Johnstone Makhubu, describing the partnership between the two revenue authorities as important in advancing cooperation on trade facilitation, customs administration, data sharing and combating illicit financial flows.
Dlamini also applauded ERS for pursuing ISO 9001:2015 certification, saying the internationally recognised quality management standard reflects the organisation’s commitment to improving service delivery, operational consistency and professionalism.
He said the certification process demonstrates that the revenue authority is focused not only on collecting revenue but also on delivering services through efficient, reliable and client-centred systems.
During the ceremony, 15 companies were recognised with Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) accreditation for meeting high standards of customs compliance and supply chain security.
Dlamini said the accreditation reflects trust, discipline and operational excellence, adding that compliant businesses benefit from improved trade efficiency while strengthening Eswatini’s competitiveness in regional and international markets.
He also thanked Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg for his continued policy support, while recognising the dedication of ERS management and staff in advancing the organisation’s mandate.
Congratulating the award recipients, Dlamini said compliant taxpayers deserve recognition for their contribution to national development and for setting an example that encourages others to honour their tax obligations.
The ERS Client Appreciation Day has become an annual platform for celebrating taxpayers whose compliance contributes to strengthening domestic revenue mobilisation and supporting the Kingdom’s socio-economic development.
