EZULWINI– The Central Statistical Office (CSO) has taken decisive steps to ensure clarity and accuracy in the 2027 Population and Housing Census. A three-day Questionnaire Development Workshop held at Happy Valley Hotel from March 31, 2026, brought together census officials, statisticians, and stakeholders to review and refine the tools and processes that will guide the nationwide count.

The workshop focused on reviewing the 2017 census framework and adapting it to reflect the Kingdom’s current realities. Every question was carefully examined to ensure it is clear, unambiguous, and capable of capturing precise information from all residents, including non-emaSwati who live in Eswatini. This is part of the CSO’s broader commitment to produce data that accurately reflects the Kingdom’s diverse population.

Hanson Dlamini, Deputy Census Commissioner, highlighted the importance of crafting questions that are both simple and precise. “A census is only as good as the clarity of its questions. Clear questions mean accurate answers, and accurate answers lead to informed planning,” he said.

The workshop also emphasised standardising data collection procedures and simplifying complex terms to minimise errors during enumeration. Stakeholders discussed the importance of training enumerators, ensuring that every household interview produces consistent and reliable data. By addressing these technical details early, the CSO aims to reduce challenges that could compromise the credibility of the census.

Accurate population information is critical for national planning. It guides decisions in healthcare, education, infrastructure, social services, and resource allocation. Without reliable data, some areas risk being underrepresented or underserved. By focusing on clarity and accuracy, the CSO ensures that no one is left uncounted and that every resident’s needs can be factored into development planning.

The workshop marked a significant step towards a modern, inclusive, and credible census. Beyond counting numbers, the 2027 Census will map the Kingdom’s human capital, providing insights for policies and programmes aimed at improving the quality of life for all who live in Eswatini.

By prioritising clarity and accuracy, the CSO demonstrates its commitment to data-driven national development and inclusive planning.
