SIDVOKODVO– Young agri-preneurs received a major boost in their journey toward sustainable farming when the Eswatini Environment Authority (EEA) partnered with the Woman Farmer Foundation for a hands-on climate-smart agriculture training session at Riders Ranch.
The training formed part of the Innovative Climate Smart Youth Tunnel Production project, an initiative aimed at equipping young farmers with modern agricultural skills that respond to the realities of climate change while improving productivity and income opportunities. The session brought together youth involved in tunnel farming, a method increasingly recognised for its efficiency, water conservation benefits, and protection of crops from unpredictable weather conditions.
During the engagement, officials from the Authority introduced participants to various environmental opportunities that can support their farming enterprises. Central to this was the Eswatini Environment Fund, a facility designed to finance projects that promote environmental sustainability. Young farmers were encouraged to consider accessing the fund to expand their operations in ways that remain environmentally responsible.
Beyond funding opportunities, the Authority emphasized the importance of environmental compliance in agriculture. Participants were guided on proper land use, safe disposal of agricultural waste, responsible chemical handling, and water conservation practices. These measures are essential practices for long-term soil health, environmental protection, and sustainable yields.
The training also highlighted how climate-smart agriculture can play a transformative role in strengthening food security and building resilience among communities. By adopting innovative farming methods such as tunnel production, young farmers can ensure consistent crop production throughout the year, despite changing weather patterns.
The collaboration between the environmental regulator and the farming foundation showcased how partnerships can create meaningful platforms for youth empowerment. It demonstrated a shared commitment to developing a generation of farmers who are both economically active and environmentally conscious.
For the participants, the session was more than just a training exercise. It was an eye-opener on how environmental stewardship and agricultural entrepreneurship can go hand in hand. By aligning their farming practices with sustainable principles, these young agri-preneurs are positioning themselves not only as food producers but also as custodians of Eswatini’s natural resources.
