MBABANE– Eswatini’s renowned comedian Dr Shakes, born Bonginkosi Dlamini, is gearing up to headline the 11th Annual Heavyweights International Comedy Festival (HICOFEST).
Scheduled for November 20, 2025, in Gaborone, Botswana, this event marks his third consecutive appearance at the festival, a testament to his growing influence and popularity across the African comedy scene.
Reflecting on his upcoming performance, Dr Shakes shared, “It feels amazing to be part of the Heavyweights Comedy Festival once again. This will be my third time performing at the festival, and every year it just keeps getting better.” He expressed a deep appreciation for Botswana’s warm reception, noting, “Botswana has always shown me so much love, and it’s become one of those places that feel like a second home on stage.”
International festivals like HICOFEST play a critical role in Dr Shakes’ artistic development. He explained that performing before diverse audiences allows him to refine his craft and connect with other talented comedians from across the continent. “International shows like this one are a big part of my growth as a comedian. They give me a chance to test my craft in front of different audiences, connect with other talented comics, and show that laughter really has no borders,” he said.
Dr Shakes also highlighted the professional benefits, adding that such exposure helps elevate the Dr Shakes brand, opening doors for collaborations and future performances throughout the region. He described his journey in comedy as both strong and exciting, emphasizing the importance of the relationships he has built over the years. “I’ve been fortunate to build solid relationships with organizers and fellow comedians from across Africa. Every festival is a learning experience, and I always walk away with new ideas, friendships, and stories to tell,” he remarked.
He further acknowledged the significance of his participation for Eswatini’s comedy scene, stating that international recognition through festivals like HICOFEST reflects positively on the Eswatini International Comedy Festival, showcasing that the country’s comedy talent is gaining respect on a wider stage.
Expressing gratitude, Dr Shakes praised the festival organizers for their continued trust. “I’m truly grateful to the Heavyweights Comedy Festival team for trusting me with their stage again. It’s always an honor to share laughter with such an incredible audience and lineup,” he said. He also applauded the festival’s role in nurturing African comedy, noting, “Thank you for keeping African comedy alive and giving us the space to shine and grow.”
