MANZINI – The East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) region is set to enhance its capacity to tackle healthcare challenges through stronger research systems, clinical innovation and evidence-based solutions following a strategic partnership aimed at transforming health outcomes across Africa.
The new era of collaboration was ushered in through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ECSA-HC and the Africa Clinical Research Network (ACRN) on August 6, 2026, during the ongoing 16th ECSA-HC Best Practices Forum (BPF) and 32nd Directors Joint Coordinating Committee (DJCC) Meeting held at The George Hotel in Manzini.
The partnership is expected to strengthen regional collaboration, expand clinical research capacity and accelerate the development of home-grown healthcare solutions that respond to the unique realities and needs of African communities.
Through the agreement, ECSA-HC and ACRN will work together to advance clinical research, strengthen health research ecosystems and promote innovations that can improve healthcare delivery across the region.
The collaboration comes at a time when African countries are intensifying efforts to build resilient health systems capable of responding to emerging health threats, improving disease prevention and ensuring that communities benefit from effective and sustainable healthcare interventions.
Speaking during the official MoU signing ceremony, ECSA-HC Director General Dr Ntuli A. Kapologwe said strengthening research capacity was critical in addressing the health challenges affecting communities across the region.
Dr Kapologwe highlighted that evidence generated through research plays a vital role in shaping effective health policies, guiding decision-making and developing interventions that respond to real community needs.
He said the partnership with ACRN would provide a platform for researchers, healthcare institutions and policymakers to collaborate in producing knowledge that can transform health services.
“Research gives us the ability to understand our challenges, develop appropriate solutions and ensure that our interventions are based on evidence. Through partnerships like this, we can strengthen our response to health challenges and improve the lives of our people,” said Dr Kapologwe.
He added that the collaboration would contribute towards improved health security, stronger research networks and increased innovation within the ECSA-HC region.
Meanwhile, Africa Clinical Research Network Chief of Staff Dr Romina Mariano described the partnership as a significant milestone in strengthening Africa’s clinical research landscape.
Mariano said collaboration with ECSA-HC would accelerate impactful research by connecting expertise, resources and institutions committed to advancing healthcare solutions.
She noted that empowering African researchers and strengthening research systems would enable countries to generate their own evidence and develop interventions that are relevant to their populations.
“This partnership strengthens our ability to advance clinical research and ensure that scientific evidence is translated into meaningful health solutions that benefit communities,” said Mariano.
The partnership will focus on key areas including expanding clinical research networks, strengthening the capacity of researchers and healthcare professionals, promoting innovation, enhancing health security and supporting evidence-based healthcare programmes.
It will also encourage stronger cooperation between governments, research institutions, healthcare providers and development partners to ensure that research findings are transformed into practical solutions that improve healthcare delivery.
The MoU signing formed part of the high-level discussions at the 16th ECSA-HC Best Practices Forum and 32nd DJCC Meeting, which has brought together regional health leaders, policymakers, researchers and development partners to share successful interventions and explore strategies for strengthening healthcare systems.
Delegates at the forum have emphasised that investment in research and innovation remains essential in preparing countries to respond effectively to current and future health challenges.
The partnership between ECSA-HC and ACRN further positions the region as a key player in advancing Africa’s health research agenda while promoting solutions that are locally developed, scientifically supported and responsive to the needs of communities.
As the ECSA-HC region continues its journey towards stronger and more resilient health systems, the collaboration is expected to unlock new opportunities for research, innovation and improved health outcomes for millions of people across the region.
